Hunter was born outside of Natchitoches Parish. She spent her whole life, living and working on local plantations. At the age of 52, she began her journey as a painter. All of her beautiful pieces are informed by her experiences with plantation life, many of them are simply painted from memory. Hunter was self taught, but her bold style and depictions of everyday life garnered her the attention of the art world. She became the first African American to have solos exhibitions at both the New Orleans Museum of Art and Northwestern State College.
